<Why you use Chinese characters or Latin, it's all just a show of pride>

That's the same for Westerners.

Hornblower in the West Indies by C.S. Forester (background: 1821 Jamaica) -----------------

(Admiral Honblower has just come to work at the Jamaica Fleet Office Building and is greeted by his secretary and deputy.)

"It's morning." (The text says it's just morning instead of good morning.)

Honblower spoke rather bluntly. He had not yet had his morning coffee. If it hadn't been in that state, I would have added the word 'good' before the word 'morning'.

As he sat at his desk, Gerrard, the deputy, began his morning report, and Spendlove, the secretary, came over his shoulder with a bundle of papers.

(...strictly... Honblower gets briefed on being annoyed by his men.)

He looked over his shoulder at the secretary. "What do you have for your report, Spendlove?"

Spendlove rushed to organize the documents in hand. Hornblower's coffee was about to arrive at some point, and Spendlove had one report he didn't want to put out before his boss drank at least half of it.

"Here is the shipyard statistical report of the 31st of the evening (ultimo), Baron," said Spendlove.

"Can't we just call it the last month?" Honblower chirped as he received the report.

"I see, Baron," said Spendlove, eager for the coffee to arrive soon.
